The Insanity workout is Shaun T's classic and most famous home fitness video, launched by Beachbody in 2009 to great reviews. Shaun T is a fitness trainer from New Jersey, and he's a fantastic motivator.

After thousands of success stories, Shaun later designed and released the Focus T25 workout in 2013, and the Insanity Max 30 exercises in 2014.

If you're looking for some serious fat loss and/or muscle building, but lead a busy life, all 3 of these exercise programs can guide you to your goal.

So which one should you choose? We'll cover the intensity, length of program, time per workout, diet plan, equipment needed and modifications available for each system to help you decide.

We've also found results from real people with quotes on their thoughts about each program.

Insanity Max 30

See our Insanity Max 30 review for a closer look at the program.

Max 30 is mainly about pushing yourself until you ‘max out'. Whether you complete the full 30 minutes or not, the important point is you're pushing to your limits, without going too far.

Once you reach your limit, you stop and note down the time you've achieved. Then next time, you try to push yourself beyond your personal boundaries. It gives you a real sense of accomplishment as you feel your body growing in power and endurance.

'Personally I'd go straight to MAX:30, the workouts are more balanced imo, and it's WAY easier to stay motivated with the 30 minute commitment.'

Intensity – This is a step beyond even the original Insanity. Max 30 will push you to your limits with CrossFit style explosive plyometrics and cardio.

Focus T25

See our Focus T25 workout review for a detailed look at the program.

The core concept of the T25 is the 25-minute workouts. Focus T25 is a HIIT based workout, and the idea is to maximize every second of your workout. It's perfect for the busy modern person who doesn't have so much time to fit in their workouts.

You begin with the Alpha cycle to build a cardio fitness foundation. Then you move up to the Beta cycle to strengthen your core.

'T25 is great, but less intense. I still lost a good 10 pounds and got really lean (and I'm very lean to start with).'

'If you don't have much experience with exercising and especially HIIT training then I would go with T25 first.'

Overview of the Focus T25Program

Length of Program – The basic course is 60 days long over 10 weeks (with a rest day each week). There is an optional third phase all about strength training, which adds a further 4 weeks if you take it up.

Time per Workout – 25 minutes. It's based on studies that show shorter exercises are just as effective as longer ones.

Modifications – T25 wins here with modified versions of every move. When the going gets tough, you can switch to a slightly easier version of whatever exercise you're doing. They're low-impact versions too, so they're perfect if you have knee issues.

Diet Plan – The nutrition plan is all about simplicity. It includes 25 recipes, each with just 5 ingredients. You can customize your plan depending on if you want to gain muscle mass or lose weight. The philosophy is to eat 5 smaller meals over the course of the day to boost your metabolism.

Equipment Needed – The T25 system includes resistance bands in the package. The resistance bands work great for the program, but I recommend investing in dumbbells anyway, because you can use them for T25 and for all sorts of other exercises in the future. A mat is also a useful investment.

Intensity – We rank T25 as the least intense of these 3 programs, but don't underestimate it! It's great for a beginner to get in good shape. You'll still be pushing yourself for the full 25 minutes of each workout.

Classic Insanity Workout

See our Insanity workout review for an in-depth look at the program.

The original Insanity is still as tough as it was when it first launched.

Insanity is based on the concept of ‘Max Interval Training', which is similar to high intensity interval training, or HIIT. In regular HIIT workouts, you'll work out in quick bursts of intense activity with longer rests or moderate exercise in between.

Max interval training flips the idea on its head, getting you to do sustained periods of intense exercise with a few short rest periods. The reasoning for this is to get you hitting your maximum capacity for as long as possible.

'I started insanity at a weight of 360 pounds. Right now I am at 315 pounds and finishing up week 4 of insanity. I am in better shape than I have been in years and feel better than I have in years.'

Overview of the Insanity Workout Program

Length of Program – Classic Insanity is 60 days long. It's split into 10 workout DVDs over 2 months. It steps up the intensity in month 2, which is really saying something considering month 1 is already tough if you're not prepared.

Time per Workout – Workouts in the first month are up to 45 minutes. In the second month, they can reach up to a full 55 minutes. It's all-out for that these workouts with plyometrics to boost your power and cardiovascular fitness.

Modifications – Insanity doesn't really have any modifications. There are none on screen anyway, but you can decide for yourself how to tone it down if you need to.

Diet Plan – Insanity comes with a nutrition guide with suggestions for a healthy, balanced diet. It helps you determine your calorific needs and proportion of carbs, fats and protein. You don't have to stick to it, but it's simple and easy to follow if you do.

Equipment Needed – You don't need any additional equipment! Insanity is hardcore cardio. You can use a mat if you have one, and I recommend a heart rate monitor watch to measure your statistics.

Intensity – We rank Insanity as number 2 in terms of intensity. It's definitely a step up from T25 with the hour-long workouts that only get harder as you progress.

T25 Vs Insanity Vs Max 30

The order of intensity for each program is:

Focus T25 (least intense) > Insanity > Max 30 (most intense)

Both T25 and Max 30 come with on-screen modifications for each move. This means you can have low-impact variations and it helps you to take a breather when necessary. The modified moves won't involve jumping, so you can take it easy on your knees for example. Insanity doesn't have modifications, so you'll have to use your judgement.

All 3 come with a great diet plan. Focus T25 is all about simple meals with just 5 ingredients each. Insanity has a great meal plan for a balanced diet. Max 30 also has a good nutrition guide and a booklet that recommends restaurants, brands and foods if you're short on time.

You don't need any special equipment for any of the 3 programs, but we recommend you get a fitness mat. It's also worthwhile investing in dumbbells for strength training. Even if you just want to lose some weight, you should look into building stronger muscles because it's good for your health.

Insanity has the longer workouts on average at about 45 minutes, whereas Max:30 are 30 minutes, and T25 are 25 minutes.

Whichever program you choose, you can buy with confidence from Beachbody, a reputable global brand. Shaun T has an amazing presence on screen and will push you to your limits and help you achieve your fitness goals.
